Try this fun game with your little one to help build awareness of the meaning of facial expressions and raise their own awareness of self-expression.
When our son was small, we kept a large mirror at his level in the room where he played the most. He would often look at himself playing, or coloring on himself with washable markers (great sensory activity!), or just catch glimpses of himself as he went about his business. Together we would look into the mirror and make faces (happy, sad, silly, etc.). We would also use our prized washable markers to draw faces on the mirror and then imitate them.
To this day, our son has some of the most expressive facial reactions and is very good at identifying a range of emotions based on them.
Big Shout Out to my good friend, Sue, for reminding me of this fun activity!
What wonderful suggestions! Love putting up the mirror so the child can just play at their own leisure.
