If you’re a family that celebrates a part of this season with an egg hunt, and you’re like us – a family with a kid on the autism spectrum that has verbal processing difficulties – you might wonder about the best way to convey the whole concept of egg hunts!
In our home, we have often found that one of the best ways to convey certain concepts has been through books or even YouTube videos. When our son was 4, Peppa's Easter Egg Hunt was our favorite. We started weeks in advance preparing, but the concept still seemed to be eluding him, so we ended up with a tech-friendly
hunt to drive the concept home.
First, we hid our eggs and then took pictures of the hiding spots. We let our son look at the photos for his “clues”. We made sure he understood how many eggs were hidden so there was a clear ending-point and he hunted his eggs using the clues.
By the time the “hunt” was done, our son seemed to grasp the concept and had fun doing it! We did the same thing the following year, but didn't need the pictures at all! Always good to be prepared, just in case.
We hope some of you find this technique of use and enjoy the Spring season! Please feel free to submit any ideas of your own and I will get them posted. We only grow stronger when we're working together for our best life.
