Looking for a fun game to play with your little one that also helps develop language? Ours started out as STAR STAR . . . PLANET!, but it can really be anything. As you've probably guessed, it is our rendition of DUCK DUCK . . . GOOSE! (which we preferred to play on the trampoline for an extra challenge) and capitalized on our son's interest - space. This was his invention - he just pivoted to space one day - and we followed his lead.
No rules (other than the basic DUCK rules). The person who is "it" chooses their topic on the fly. Not only does it reinforce interactions in a positive way, it fosters creativity, and also introduces the concept of relational items or terms (e.g., CACTUS CACTUS . . . SAGUARO!; PLEASE PLEASE . . . THANK YOU!). We also found that it really increased engagement because our guy could choose his topic and would rotate between his preferred things so he had more fun. This was a favorite family game for a long time and eventually evolved into whole topical strings (e.g., EARTH VENUS MERCURY . . . SUN!).
One of the beauties of DUCK DUCK is that you can play it almost anywhere under any conditions! So, inside or outside, rain or shine, hot or cold, next time you are looking for a fun game with family/friend engagement put on your creative cap and see where your child leads you - even if BOOGERS are involved!
